As a core subject mathematics is taught from our pre- school class where children are encouraged to count to 10, recognise written numbers and sort various shapes into groups. By the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage, our children will have developed a strong grounding in number, the building blocks, to excel mathematically. Children will be able to count confidently and have a deep understanding of the numbers and bonds to 10 and beyond. Their knowledge and vocabulary will be strengthened through frequent and varied practical opportunities. In addition, children will have developed their spatial reasoning skills across all areas of mathematics including shape, space and measures. Children will develop positive attitudes and interests in mathematics enabling them to look for patterns, connections and relationships.
At the end of Key Stage 1 (end of the infants), our children will have developed confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value. The White Rose Maths scheme we use encourages children to question and explain their understanding through problem solving and the use of practical resources. Mathematical language consistent with their age range will be encouraged. Children will be able to recognise, sort, describe and compare different shapes using the correct related vocabulary. They will also be able to describe and compare different quantities using a range of measurements.
At the beginning of the Key Stage 2, (juniors), preparations for the selection tests for the child’s secondary schools begin in earnest. By the end of the key stage, children will have extended their understanding of place value to include large numbers of more than a million as well as being able to recognise tenths, hundredths and thousandths. They will have developed the connections between inverse operations and apply known facts to fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios. Children will be able to solve complex word problems including those demanding efficient written and mental methods of calculation or algebra. They will have consolidated and extended their knowledge of geometry and measurement by classifying shapes with increasingly complex geometric properties and learnt the required vocabulary they need to describe them. Children will be able to read, spell and pronounce mathematical vocabulary correctly and appropriately.
Children from Reception to Year 6 have a login to use Maths Shed which uses interactive games and quizzes based on the White Rose maths scheme to help consolidate their learning.
