Welcome to our two Year 2 Classes – Mrs Farnes and Mrs Paice are the class teachers. Music and French are taught by specialist teachers. The children usually join Year 2 at the beginning of the Autumn term in the academic year in which they have their seventh birthday. New pupils are welcome at any time, if there are spaces available.

The children have a lively and enjoyable year ahead of them in Year 2. A strong emphasis continues to be placed on the essentials of grammar, literacy and numeracy. Each child has a Reading Folder which goes between school and home each day along with a reading book, spelling book and contact book. Children have one to one time each day in school to hear their reading. The children also visit the Library Bus to borrow books to take home.

Children have new experiences and challenges to look forward to. We cover a variety of topics during the year including Space and Ancient Egypt. To enhance our learning we have class trips for example, most recently to the Ancient Egyptian Day at the Museum of Kent Life.

A specialist teacher builds on the French words and an understanding of French culture learnt in Reception and Year 1. Children also have weekly music and singing lessons by a specialist teacher.

Individuals and small groups are given special support where necessary to reach and maintain the same level as the rest of the class.

We encourage the children to increase their independence steadily as they move up through the school. When they reach Year 2, we hope they can be dropped at the school gate in the morning to come into school on their own. They can be collected at 3:30 p.m. from their teacher at the school gate.

Homework is set daily, which is varied. Spellings are set at the beginning of the week and are tested at the end of the week. We ask parents to hear their child read daily after school. Associated homework can include work to help with phonics and sentence structure and to encourage enjoyment of story reading.

Children are encouraged to investigate further at home into the topics we study at school. Children often bring in a related book or object from home for our topic table.

Children need to have a named large pencil case in school. It should contain the following: eraser, 2 sharp HB pencils, sharpener, coloured pencils and pens and a short ruler. All equipment should be named.

Please provide your child with a named water bottle and table napkin in a soft case.
